Our story

Ā tātou kōrero

From living-room lectures to a registered trust serving generations of Indonesian Muslims in Tamaki Makaurau.

What began as a few families meeting for pengajian has grown into a community that spans generations.

Before 2005

Pengajian Kampung Auckland

Islamic lectures started small, held from home to home. A handful of families called it Pengajian Kampung Auckland, the Auckland Village Lecture.

20 August 2005

HUMIA is inaugurated

The community registered HUMIA, Himpunan Umat Muslim Indonesia di Auckland. Indonesia's Ambassador, Mr Primo Alui Joelianto, opened the first inauguration.

2006

A home in the community

Lectures moved to a community centre so newcomers would not have to find their way to a stranger's house. The fortnightly gathering became more than study. It became connection.

Today

One community, many paths here

HUMIA now brings together international students, new migrants, and Indonesian New Zealanders born in Aotearoa. Lectures, Quran classes, charity, and the meals that follow.

Leadership

Board of Trustees

Ummah representatives are elected by the community. They then vote for the Board of Trustees every two years.
